About the SMART Recovery Program

SMART Recovery is a skills-based program based on the science of successful behavior change. It is informed by strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and Motivational Interviewing.

The SMART Recovery 4-Point Program:

  1. Build and maintain motivation
  2. Cope with urges
  3. Manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
  4. Live a balanced life

SMART Recovery supports multiple pathways to recovery. You can attend other peer support meetings along with SMART, and/or utilize clinical supports such as therapy or medication-assisted recovery. SMART Recovery is a secular program, but supports anyone incorporating religious and/or spiritual beliefs into their own recovery.

Who Can Attend SMART Recovery Meetings?

Anyone is welcome to attend SMART Recovery, whether or not they are sure they are fully ready to make a change or what exactly a change would look for them. You can attend SMART meetings to change behaviors related to any addiction, including alcohol, drugs, vaping/nicotine, food, self-harm, gambling, and more.

SMART is welcoming to people practicing harm reduction. Abstinence is not a requirement to attend meetings.

Specialized meetings are held for a variety of communities, including teens, young adults (ages 18-30), adults, veterans & first responders, and LGBTQIA+. SMART Recovery Family & Friends meetings are also offered for family members and friends of individuals that are using substances and/or in recovery.

What to Expect at a SMART Meeting

Local meetings are held in-person and online worldwide. Large national meetings on Zoom allow you to attend completely anonymously. No one ever has to talk in a meeting or share why they are attending.

Meetings are guided by trained facilitators; however, the meetings truly belong to peers: people who understand what you’re going through, and who share stories you can relate to.
